Tajweed Tutorial – Lesson 1
الْحُرُوفُ الْهِجَاهِيَّةُ
These are Arabic letters, they are alphabets used in Arabic Language. They are the letters combined together form an Arabic word.
As we all know, in English Language, we have 26 letters from letter A to Z. We put these English letters together to form English words.
For Examples: we take E+A+T = EAT, which means to eat something like food, to take in food particle into our body through mouths or something else.
The same things applicable to Arabic Language, These Arabic letters are combined to form Arabic words.
For Examples: we take (َط+ ع + م (طَعِم, which also means to eat something.
The followings are the properties of Arabic Alphabets:
- There are 28 letters in Arabic Alphabets.
- All the letters in the Alphabets are Consonants
- The letters are read and write from right to left.
- Almost all the letters in an Arabic word are joined together.
- Some letters can’t join because of their shape.
- There is nothing like capital letters or small letters.
They are as follows:

Consonants and vowels
Arabic Consonants
As in English, we have consonants and vowels, English consonants are Bb Cc Dd Ff Gg Hh Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz while the vowels are Aa Ee Ii Oo Uu.
Vowels make it easy for us to pronounce the letters together and give us a meaningful word. E.g Imagine, if you are to read and pronounce this word: CNSNNT.
You see that its difficult to read and pronounce even its meaningless. But if we put vowels in between the letters above, you will be able to read and pronounce it.
CONSONANT
The same things happens to Arabic Language, all Arabic letters are consonants.
But does that means there is no vowels in Arabic Language ?? No, There are vowels, they are called Shakalaat.
Arabic Vowels
Arabic vowels are marks or signs place on top or underneath the Arabic letters. There are four in numbers. They are known as Shakalaat – الشَّكَلاَتُ
They are Fathah, Kasroh, Domma and Sukuun. They are Arabic vowels called Shakalaat.
