كِتَابَةُ الْهَمْزَةِ

This is defined as a specific way in which hamzah is written. It refers to the method or way to write letter hamzah either in the beginning, middle or end.

Hamzah is written in different ways and styles which makes it entitles to special treatment when it comes to how Arabic letters are written.

Types of Hamzah

Hamzah being part of Arabic letters can be written on or underneath another letter. There are two types of hamzah, namely:

  • هَمْزَةُ الْوَصْلِ ( ٱ )
  • هَمْزَةُ الْقَطْعِ ( أ )

هَمْزَةُ الْوَصْلِ ( ٱ )

The first one (Hamzatul wasl) is a Hamzah that can not take any shaklu or harakah in its original position. It is usually neglected (unpronounced) when found in-between words. Its only called with an harakah taken from its companion letters.

Hamzatul wasl is mostly found in the beginning of an Arabic word. The followings are conditions by which Hamzatul wasl is taken or pronounced with harakah:

  • It is pronounced with kasroh if the third letter (counting from the right, I.e from hamzatul wasl ) takes fathah. For example:

ٱذْهَبْ

  • It is pronounced with kasroh again if the third letter (counting from the right I.e from Hamzatul wasl) takes kasroh. For example:

ٱضْرِبْ ، ٱجْلِسْ

  • It is pronounced with Dommah if the third letter (harf) takes dommah. For example:

ٱدْخُلْ ، ٱكْتُبْ ، ٱسْكُتْ

هَمْزَةُ الْقَطْعِ ( أ )

This hamzah take direct harakah in its original state and pronounced with that particular harakah been taken. The following table show how this Hamzah ( Hamzatul qot’i) is pronounced:

EndMidBeg

It is the type of Hamzah that is written on or underneath other letters like yaa, waa and alif.

It can only be written upon alif in the beginning of a word and underneath yaa and waa both in the middle and the end of a word.
